Wood, plastic, fiberglass. What your bar stool seat is made of can be anything, really. Not that this fact makes your decision any easier. But if you’re stuck, think about practicality if you want to be able to wipe it clean, something non-upholstered might be the way to go.
Another type is the counter height stool. These have the ideal height for a 36-39” high counter top. They are around 24-27” high and they’re also great to have on their own for extra seating. These are commonly used for kitchen or bar counters.
Bar stools generally come in three different heights. The first type is the short bar stool. In this category you’ll find the table height stools that are 16-23” high and are suitable for 28-30” high surfaces. They can be a good alternative to regular chairs.

Round bar stools can take on a retro feel when they are outfitted with an old-fashioned seat, foot rail and pedestal base. These were found at Finch, in Hudson, New York. The vintage look would fit well at a traditional style bar or at a rustic or modern kitchen counter.
Another type is the counter-height stool which is the one we’re more interested in. These stools are smaller than the ones used in bars and restaurants and they’re the best for kitchen islands. They measure between 24” and 27” in height. Then there’s also the bar-height stool which is the same one you see in bars. These can be used for standard built-in bars and have a height of 28” to 33”. The fourth type is the extra tall stool which is somewhere between 33” and 36” tall. In its case the name pretty much speaks for itself.
